BRIDGEWATER, NJ — If Democrats refuse to go along with President Donald Trump’s border security plans — including a U.S.-Mexico wall — Trump said he’d be willing to shut down the government.
“I would be willing to ‘shut down’ government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall!” Trump tweeted Sunday morning. “Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT!
“We need great people coming into our Country!” he said.
The border wall is a campaign promise for Trump, who said it would help prevent illegal immigration. He has received some money for the project from Congress, but not as much as he wanted.

Trump also wants changes to legal immigration, including scrapping a visa lottery program. In addition, he wants to end the practice of releasing immigrants caught entering the country illegally on the condition that they show up for court hearings.
Lawmakers in March approved a spending bill that funded the government through September. At the time, Trump threatened to veto the bill, but eventually caved.
“I said to Congress, I will never sign another bill like this again,” Trump said at the time.
In June, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would cancel much of his chamber’s recess in August to allow more time for topics including Trump’s nominees and appropriations proposals.
McConnell and Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan met with the president last week to talk about funding the government.
